Cardinals Win N.L. Wild Card Berth
The Braves completed one of the most historic September collapses in baseball, losing 4-3 to Philadelphia in 13 innings as the St. Louis Cardinals won the National League wild card.
The Braves, up 3-2 in the top of the ninth inning, put their season on the shoulders of All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel. But Krimbel walked two batters and surrendered a sacrifice fly to Chase Utley, leaving the game with the Braves tied. In the thirteenth inning, Hunter Pence put the nail in the Braves' coffin with a one-run infield single.
In St. Louis, with the season on the line, the Cardinals turned to their on-again, off-again ace Chris Carpenter, and this time he delivered. Carpenter went the distance, striking out 11, as the Cardinals beat the Astros 8-0.
The Braves led the Cardinals by 10-1/2 games at the start of play Aug. 26. Since then, the Cardinals are 22-9, the Braves 10-20.
